Amanohashidate and Ine at a glance

Amanohashidate is a long sandbar covered with pine trees that crosses a bay in Miyazu, in the Tango region in the north of Kyoto Prefecture. It is far from Kyoto city: about 2 hours by train. Ine, with its boat houses on the water, is a separate town in the same region, about one more hour by local bus.

Because the two places are far apart and the bus to Ine takes time, many visitors book an Amanohashidate day trip from Kyoto. The tours on offer combine the sandbar with Ine, and some also stop in the thatched village of Miyama.

Shorter versions with a boat ride

Some day trips from Kyoto take about 8 hours and include a boat ride in Ine or a stop in Miyama. Check what the price covers before you book.

An Amanohashidate tour with Ine saves you the change from train to bus. The time at each place is limited, though, and guides speak English and Chinese or several languages, depending on the tour. If the boat in Ine matters to you, choose the option that includes it. For other day trips, see our day trips from Kyoto.

Amanohashidate View Land

View Land is a hilltop park with a view over the sandbar. You ride up and back by chairlift or monorail, and the entry fee includes the ride. You cannot walk or drive up. Tickets cost ¥1,000 from age 12 and ¥500 for ages 6 to 11. One child up to age 5 rides free with each adult. With a disability certificate you pay ¥500 or ¥250, and so does one companion.

From 1 October to 15 November it opens from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with ticket sales until 5 p.m. From 16 November to 15 February it opens from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with sales until 4:30 p.m. Check the hours for other months before you go.

Kasamatsu Park: cable car and chairlift

Kasamatsu Park lies on the north side of the bay. You go up by cable car, which is a funicular, or by chairlift. A return ticket costs ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children. The park opens from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., with seasonal changes. The classic way to look at the sandbar is mata-nozoki: you bend over and look at the landscape through your legs. Kasamatsu describes that view as a rising dragon. The park is closed on 18 December 2026.

View Land and Kasamatsu are different parks with different lifts and tickets. A ticket for one does not cover the other.

Ine no Funaya: the boat houses of Ine

About 230 boat houses, funaya, line the bay of Ine. The ground floor at the water often serves as a work and storage space. The main homes are often on the other side of the road. These are private buildings, so you cannot go inside in general. Stay on public ground and respect the residents.

You see the boat houses well from the water. The large bay cruise starts at Hide and lasts about 25 minutes. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., usually on the hour and half hour. Tickets cost ¥1,200 from age 13 and ¥600 for elementary school children aged 6 to 12. One preschool child rides free with each adult, and with proof of disability you pay half. Boats can be cancelled in bad weather. The fare does not apply to private water taxis.
