How Kyoto tours differ

Kyoto tours come in a few clear formats. Full-day coach tours start at Kyoto Station and take in four or five big sights in 8.5 to 10 hours. Guided early morning tours use trains and your own IC card. Walking tours in Gion last about 2 hours, food tours about 3 hours, and a tea ceremony fits into 50 to 70 minutes. Day tours to Nara, Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama leave from Kyoto or Osaka.

For each tour, check three things: where you meet, which entry tickets are in the price and which meals are only part of a chosen option. Hotel pickup is rare. Most Kyoto tours on this page meet at a fixed point near Kyoto Station, in Gion or in Uji.

Our picks: Kyoto tours

Two coach days include temple tickets and start near Kyoto Station. Take the short guided Kiyomizu-dera visit if you only want that one temple in 90 minutes, and one of the food walks, in Gion and Pontocho or in Nishiki Market, if eating is part of the plan.

Hand-picked tours, booked through Viator and GetYourGuide. Prices are indicative starting prices in US dollars (as of October 2026). Tap a tour for live availability and the current price in your currency.

Kyoto day tours by coach

The classic sights in one day, without planning bus routes yourself.

The classic Kyoto circuit

A classic full-day bus tour meets at a fixed point by Kyoto Station in Minami ward and runs for 8.5 to 9 hours. It visits Fushimi Inari, Kinkaku-ji, the Arashiyama bamboo grove, Kiyomizu-dera and Sanjusangen-do. A guide, an air-conditioned coach with Wi-Fi and entry tickets for Kiyomizu-dera, Tenryu-ji, Kinkaku-ji and Sanjusangen-do are included. Lunch is a buffet only if you choose that option, and there is no hotel pickup.

Kyoto and Nara in one day

Coach tours of 9 to 10 hours combine Nara, Fushimi Inari and Arashiyama, with a start in Kyoto or Osaka depending on the option you book. Guide, coach, parking and fuel are covered; entry fees and food are not promised. If Nara is your main goal, see Nara from Kyoto.

Day trips from Kyoto →

Hiroshima and Miyajima

Long tours of 8 to 12 hours go to Hiroshima and Miyajima. Some plans from Kyoto include a return Shinkansen ticket, the Miyajima ferry and entry to Itsukushima Shrine and the Peace Memorial Museum. Read the plan carefully, because the inclusions depend on your departure city.

Amanohashidate, Ine and Miyama

Coach day tours of about 10 hours leave Kyoto or Osaka for the Tango coast in the north of the prefecture. Some also stop in the thatched village of Miyama. The boat around Ine Bay and the cable car at Amanohashidate are only included if you pick the option that contains them. Meals and hotel pickup are not part of the price.

Kyoto walking tours and early starts

Smaller groups, trains and your own feet.

Early morning tour by train

A 6-hour early morning tour with an English-speaking guide covers Fushimi Inari, Arashiyama and Kinkaku-ji. You meet at the central ticket gate of Kyoto Station. Train fares on your IC card, lunch and the Kinkaku-ji entry ticket are paid separately.

Gion in the evening

A guided night walk of about 100 minutes starts at the Minamiza theater on the Gion side of the Kamo River. It covers the history of the geisha districts, and the guide takes photos of your group. Seeing a maiko or geiko is not part of the deal. If you want to meet a performer, book a tour with a geisha performance instead: one 3 to 3.5-hour format adds a 50-minute meeting with questions and one or two songs, with lunch, tea or dinner depending on the time slot.

Gion and geisha culture →

Kiyomizu-dera with a guide

A 90-minute guided tour of Kiyomizu-dera includes the temple admission and starts at the Nio-mon gate, in the early morning or the afternoon. Getting to the gate is up to you. For more walking tours in Higashiyama, see Kiyomizu-dera tours.

E-bike tours

E-bike tours of about 4 hours ride through backstreets and past temples. They suit people who want to cover more ground than on foot without a coach.

Narrow Gion street in the evening with lanterns and a taxi

Food tours, tea and hands-on classes

Shorter slots that fit around sightseeing.

Gion and Pontocho food tour

A 3-hour food tour meets in Gion and visits one restaurant and one izakaya, with up to 13 dishes and two drinks. Extra drinks cost more. The number of dishes is a maximum, not a promise.

Evening dinners, a Kawaramachi izakaya crawl and a kimono tea ceremony in Nishiki are compared in our Kyoto food tour guide.

Pontocho and Kawaramachi →

Nishiki Market tasting walk

A 3-hour walk through Nishiki Market includes 7 tastings, a local guide and a stop at Nishiki Tenmangu. The market association asks visitors not to eat while walking, so tastings happen at the stalls.

Tea ceremony

Tea ceremonies last 50 to 70 minutes. One takes place in a garden tea house near Kiyomizu-dera, with two bowls of Uji matcha, one prepared by you, and sweets; children aged 7 and under cannot join. Another is a chanoyu workshop in a temple in Shimogyo ward. Neither includes a kimono, and the garden tea house does not offer rental at all.

Tea ceremony and experiences →

Ramen, kintsugi and knives

A ramen-making class takes about 90 minutes, a kintsugi repair workshop about 75 minutes and a knife-making session with a blacksmith about 3 hours. These are short, bookable slots for a rainy afternoon.

Kimono rental

Kimono rental runs for one day. One shop near Kiyomizu-dera includes accessories, dressing help and hair styling until 5 p.m. Another rents a yukata from June to September and a kimono from October to May, with hair styling extra.

Uji tea tours

In Uji, a 3 to 3.5-hour walking tour starts at Uji Station and includes Byodo-in entry and a 30-minute tea ceremony or matcha class. A shorter one-hour visit combines a tea museum ticket with grinding your own matcha.

For most first-time visitors with two or three days, one classic coach tour plus a Gion evening walk covers the famous sights and leaves the other days free for slow walks in Higashiyama and a trip to Uji. If you dislike long coach days, the early morning tour by train and a tea ceremony are the lighter combination.

If you would rather ride than walk, our Kyoto bike tour page compares e-bike and full-day routes.

Before you book a Kyoto tour

Practical points that are easy to miss.

Arriving by Shinkansen

Many coach tours and the early morning tour meet at Kyoto Station, so you can join right after arriving by Shinkansen. Leave your luggage first, combine trains and buses, and do not block pavements when you walk as a group.

Getting to Kyoto →

Getting to the meeting point

A single city bus ride costs ¥230 for adults in the flat fare zone. The Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass costs ¥1,100 and is valid on the calendar day you start it. Express buses EX100 and EX101 run on weekends and holidays for ¥500 per ride.

Entry fees outside the tour

If a tour does not include tickets, plan for them: Sanjusangen-do ¥600, To-ji Kondo and Kodo ¥800, Ginkaku-ji ¥1,000 and Nijo Castle with Ninomaru Palace ¥1,300 for adults in 2026.

Busy seasons

Cherry blossom time in late March and early April and the autumn leaves from mid-November to early December are especially busy. Book early for those weeks.

Kyoto tours: frequently asked questions

Do Kyoto bus tours include hotel pickup?

The full-day coach tours on this page do not. You meet at a fixed point at Kyoto Station, or in Osaka on tours with two departure options. Check the meeting point for your option the day before.

Will I see a geisha on a Gion walking tour?

Not necessarily. A walk explains the district, but meeting maiko or geiko on the street is never guaranteed. Only tours with a booked performance include time with a geisha. On any walk, do not follow or photograph people without consent.

Are entry fees included in Kyoto day tours?

It depends on the tour. The classic coach tour includes four temple tickets, while the early morning tour and the Kyoto and Nara coach tour do not promise entry fees. Read the inclusions of the exact option before you pay.

Is the boat in Ine part of the Amanohashidate day tour?

Only if you choose the option that includes it. The same applies to the cable car at Amanohashidate. On its own, the Ine Bay boat costs ¥1,200 for adults and can be cancelled in bad weather.

Can children join a tea ceremony?

Rules differ by venue. The garden tea house near Kiyomizu-dera does not admit children aged 7 and under. Check the age rules of the session you want before booking.
