Kyoto Railway Museum at a glance
The Kyoto Railway Museum sits in Umekoji Park in the city of Kyoto. It shows historic trains in large halls, and a steam train ride, paid separately, lets you travel behind a working locomotive. For most visitors it is a half day, and it works well on a rainy day or as a break from temples.
The museum suits families, and adults who like trains easily spend longer. If you want the rest of your stay planned for you, our page on Kyoto day tours compares the guided tours that start at or near Kyoto Station.

Kyoto Railway Museum entry fee in 2026
Prices in yen for 2026. The steam train ride is not part of the museum ticket.
| Ticket | Adults | University and high school | Elementary and junior high | Children from 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Railway Museum | ¥1,500 | ¥1,300 | ¥500 | ¥200 |
| SL Steam ride (extra) | ¥300 | ¥300 | ¥100 | ¥100 |
| Kyoto Aquarium (since 10 Feb 2026) | ¥2,600 | ¥2,000 (high school) | ¥1,400 | ¥900 |
For most families, the museum ticket plus one steam ride is the right amount for a morning. Add the aquarium only if your children still have energy after lunch, because the two together make a full day.
Kyoto tours from Kyoto Station
Guided Kyoto day tours and early starts that meet at or near Kyoto Station, for the days around your museum visit.
Opening hours and closing days
The museum opens from 10:00 to 17:00, and the last entry is at 16:30. It is regularly closed on Wednesdays and from 30 December to 1 January. The annual calendar makes exceptions around public holidays and school holidays, when the museum may open on a Wednesday, so check the current calendar before you plan a midweek visit.
Arrive close to opening if you want a steam ride early in the day. Tickets for the ride are sold for that day only, from the time the museum opens, at a machine on the platform.
SL Steam: the steam train ride
The SL Steam ride is the part most children remember. It costs ¥300 on top of the museum entry, and ¥100 for anyone from 3 years old up to junior high school age. You buy the ride ticket at the platform machine on the day of your visit; sales start when the museum opens.
The steam train follows its own timetable, and departures are not available at any moment you like. Look at the day's schedule when you arrive and plan the rest of the visit around it. There is also a driving simulator, which needs a separate ticket bought in advance. Cash is not accepted for it on site, so sort it out before you go if your children want to try it.
- Steam ride: ¥300 adults, ¥100 for ages 3 to junior high, bought on the day.
- Simulator: separate ticket, bought in advance, no cash at the museum.
- Museum ticket: does not include either of the two.
Kyoto Aquarium in Umekoji Park
The Kyoto Aquarium is in the same park, which makes it the natural second stop. Since 10 February 2026 the aquarium charges ¥2,600 for adults, ¥2,000 for high school students, ¥1,400 for elementary and junior high students and ¥900 from 3 years old. Visitors with a disability certificate and 1 companion pay half.
Aquarium opening hours and closing days are not the same as the museum's, so check both calendars for your date.

Getting there from Kyoto Station
Kyoto Station is the starting point for almost every visit. It is where the Shinkansen, the Haruka airport train and the airport bus from KIX arrive, so you can visit the museum on the day you arrive if you leave your luggage first. City buses charge a flat ¥230 for adults and ¥120 for children inside the flat-fare zone. The Subway and Bus 1-Day Pass costs ¥1,100 for adults and ¥550 for children and is valid for the calendar day you first use it, not for 24 hours.
Check the current bus stop and route in the city's Bus Navi before you set off, and combine bus and train where it saves time. More on arriving by train or plane is on our getting to Kyoto page.
Train fans can add a short trip on the JR Nara Line: Inari Station, about 5 minutes from Kyoto Station, is right at Fushimi Inari Taisha. To-ji, with its pagoda of about 55 m, charges ¥800 for adults for the Kondo and Kodo halls.
